There are some tried and true events that engage alumni athletes which present an opportunity to get creative and bring a new outlook to old traditions. There are also new ways to engage your alumni that have power to foster a sense of camaraderie, and strengthen their connection with their alma mater. Here are some (more) event ideas tailored to athletics alumni:
- Tailgate Gatherings: Perhaps the most common form of engagement, pre-game tailgate parties for major sporting events have been a huge attraction to bring alumni back to campus. Think about new ways to attract alumni by having a special guest visit tailgates and/or organize tailgates by team year rather than class year.
- Homecoming Celebrations: Incorporate athletics alumni events into the overall homecoming festivities. Alumni can be invited to participate in the homecoming parade, halftime shows, and other celebrations. Call on alumni to generate new ways for them to participate.
- Alumni Sports Clinics: Arrange sports clinics led by former student-athletes or coaches. These clinics can be open to the public or exclusively for alumni, offering opportunities to learn new skills and techniques.
- Alumni Sports Tours: Organize sports-themed travel tours for alumni to attend major sporting events or tournaments. This allows alumni to bond over their shared passion for sports while experiencing new places together.
- Alumni Golf Tournament: Arrange a golf tournament exclusively for athletics alumni. Golf is a popular sport among many former athletes, and it provides a relaxed and enjoyable setting for reconnecting.
- Virtual Events: If in-person gatherings are not feasible, consider hosting virtual events, such as online Q&A sessions, webinars with athletics experts, or virtual watch parties for games.
Remember to tailor the events to suit the interests and preferences of the athletics alumni community. Engaging alumni through these events can strengthen their bond with the university, encourage continued support, and create a lasting impact on the athletics program.
